NOTE by CHET SNOW, Feb 19, 2014 - This profile is a "tough one" as there are several spellings of the Surname plus multiple marriages and, if the research below is correct, it seems this man returned to Germany in 1762 after his first wife died in MD and married a German woman there and brought her back to Maryland. Even though the original last name was undoubtedly STIEHL, and this man was NOT part of the Steele /Steel family of England, because most of his children used STIHLI as their surname, that seems the best one to keep here with the others as AKAs.

Occupation: farmer and turner (A "turner" worked in a sawmill or in carpentry work, turning a lathe.)

Christoph was a Lutheran before marrying into German Baptist Brethren families. On April 12, 1776, he was fined by the "Committee of Observation" for being a "non-associator. The fine was reduced from six pounds and ten pence to four pounds and 10 pence "because of hardship." (Maryland Historical Magazine, v. XI, no. 3, Sept. 1916, p. 257.)
